We are an independent nursery passionate about plants, founded by grower and gardener Barry Grain. Barry has over 30 years experience in horticulture, 15 of those spent as a head gardener, and it’s his experience and love of plants that is at the heart of Rosemeade.
Barry represents the third generation of gardeners in his family, with his grandfather being a great source of inspiration. Rosemeade was the name of the cottage his grandparents lived at, and where the journey began.
In his career he has worked at specialist nurseries, as well as public and private gardens. Notably he led the development of Cholmondeley Castle’s fine garden for 12 years, and in 2024 was recognised with an award from the Professional Gardeners Guild.
An RHS medal winner, Barry has designed exhibits at RHS Chelsea and Tatton Park Flower Shows.
How We Grow Today
It’s with our skill and eye for a good plant that we select what we grow, based on character, interest, hardiness, and climate resilience. Our speciality is Magnolias, grafted in winter using a hot pipe system, and in summer with humidity tents. We are also partial to Acer, Quercus, Prunus, and Hydrangea (but we make no secret that we love it all!).
We are very proud of the woody range we offer, propagated by us from cuttings using mist propagation, grafting, and seed. Elsewhere on the nursery we grow a range of perennials, grasses, and ferns to complement our woodies, producing from seeds and division.
We care about the environment and aim to be as sustainable as possible. We use peat free composts, biological pest management, and are always looking to increase sustainability. But it’s not just about great plants. We work with regional horticultural colleges to teach propagation and plant skills, as well as working with newly qualified horticulturists to bolster their skill set. Our broader vision is to bring together professionals, amateurs, students, and designers alike under the Rosemeade banner, and to develop a strong regional community through our shared love of plants.
